Cider Barn
Several refurbishment projects have been carried out on this spacious Somerset farmhouse.
Outbuildings were refurbished to provide an office and internal remodelling was undertaken to form a new kitchen with utility room and hall. The new opening from the kitchen to the dining room allows evening sunlight to flood through the house. The new terrace is a sun trap and by adjusting floor levels, forms an extra room that flows into the hall, kitchen and dining room.
The deteriorating old cider barn was carefully dismantled and rebuilt “as new” using traditional materials and techniques. The existing lean-to shelters under the cat slide roof have now been reinstated in natural blue lias stone walls and substantial timber framed roofs to form a workshop and log store.
All the building work, including the green oak roof was carried out by local craftspeople, using traditional building methods and reusing the materials recuperated from the original barn. We don’t know when the original barn was built but it certainly served many generations of previous owners. The new barn will serve many generations in the future. The project was completed in August 2009 and has since seen a good many social events!
