CSH 5 Housing Stawell
The Old Apple Store, Stawell is the first private sector housing development in the country built to Level 5 of the Code for Sustainable Homes. Five houses were constructed on a brownfield site to incorporate renewable energy and sustainable construction techniques. Three terraced three-bed homes and two four-bed detached houses will complement the conservation area and give an independent quality of life for residents, whilst having minimal impact on the environment. Onsite energy production is designed to generate 100% of the electricity demand for lighting, pumps, fans etc. and the levels of insulation to deliver a 100% improvement on the “dwelling emission rate” of a house built to current Building Regulations.
We are delighted that this project was a finalist for the LABC Awards SW – Building Excellence – Best Sustainable Project. The LABC South West Building Excellence Awards recognise and reward the best quality design construction and project management in Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset. The quality stems from good design and an efficient design team, and is translated into quality buildings by an effective construction team. Throughout this process Local Authority Building Control monitors the quality of design and construction. We are very proud to be amongst the best sustainable projects in the region.
Oxford Brooks Research Unit is currently carrying out studies into actual energy use and heat loss with result being published late 2011.
This project featured as one of four national case studies of sustainable architecture, in the Department for Communities & Local Government Sustainable Housing publication: Code for Sustainable Homes
The houses have also won the Regen South West Best Sustainable Development award.
