Straw Bale House

Wedmore, Somerset

O2i Design Ltd helped the owners of this plot to create a two storey timber-framed straw bale house.  The aim was to create a virtually self-sufficient home. The owners, Anthony and Andy’s new eco self-build is a masterclass in sustainable home building.  Anthony said  “We were looking to build and came across an old stone cottage on Plotfinder.net. With a view to die for, we knew right away it was ideal…and when we engaged Duncan Pyle from O2i Design Ltd, we knew that we were on the right track.”  This timber-frame home has straw-bale walls with plaster made of clay from the foundations.  It is a remarkable achievement by the owners and a real testament of their vision to achieve a low-impact home.  The following green features were incorporated in the build :

  • The timber frame and straw bale walls rendered with lime
  • Passive solar heating
  • Roof-mounted solar panels
  • log burning stove
  • A  heat recovery ventilation system
  • Rainwater harvesting and composting toilets

This self-build straw bale house was a Finalists in the Homebuilding and Renovating Awards 2011 (self-build category) & The Telegraph Eco Home Winner (as voted for by readers).  You can read more about the Telegraph Awards here
