The Challenge
Once the project received planning permission, our client asked us to review several aspects of the approved design. The aim was never to redesign the house. Instead, we wanted to improve how it would function for everyday living while protecting the quality of the original design. Every decision needed to respect the approved scheme and give the client confidence to move forward.
Refining the Design
The approved design created a contemporary home that responds confidently to its coastal setting and makes the most of far-reaching views across the Bristol Channel. We worked closely with our client to review the internal layout and identify opportunities to improve the way the home would function. Rather than redesigning the project, we refined it. We carefully reorganised the internal layout to improve the flow between the principal living spaces. As a result, the finished home will feel more practical, intuitive and enjoyable to live in.
Small Changes With Lasting Benefits
We introduced a series of carefully considered amendments that created a home which is both practical and elegant. Inside, we improved the relationship between the main living spaces to create a more comfortable and flexible layout.
Outside, we simplified several secondary design elements to achieve a cleaner and more coherent appearance. We also reduced selected areas of glazing. This created a more balanced composition while maintaining the contemporary character of the building and its strong connection with the surrounding landscape.
Updated lighting assessments confirmed that the revised design continued to satisfy the approved environmental requirements. As a result, the amendments created no additional impact beyond the site.
Each change was modest. Together, however, they created a home that better reflects our client’s aspirations while remaining faithful to the original design.
Managing Change With Confidence
Even relatively small design changes can require further planning approval.
We prepared the revised proposals, coordinated the supporting technical information and demonstrated that every amendment remained consistent with the approved design. We also produced clear, well-organised drawings and supporting documents. This enabled the planning authority to assess the revised proposals efficiently and helped keep the project moving forward with confidence.
