Community Media CentreBridgwater, Somerset
O2i Design Consultants worked with a local charity to create a new Community Media Centre. Our design team assisted Somerset Film in securing funding for the refurbishment of newly acquired premises. Somerset Film obtained considerable funding from Arts Council England. This funding was for the first phase of upgrading the Engine Room community media centre. The grant allowed the charity to refurbish their premises on Bridgwater High Street. The new studios enhance digital and creative media services. The new premises offer community rehearsal/meeting spaces, house a local film and TV archive and improve edit facilities. Better access and connectivity is now available.
O2i Design’s new building created flexible new studio spaces over three floors. New circulation links to the existing areas make the whole building fully accessible. A new three-storey rear extension has been added. The current building was gutted and the front facade retained. The building was gutted, leaving only the front facade and some spectacular temporary steel propping. A new steel and concrete framework created three flexible studio spaces. The new enlarged studio facilities include dedicated space for disabled filmmakers. This project has recently won “Best Public Service Building” across the South West for the renovation and extension of the Engine Room, Bridgwater for Somerset Film as part of the LABC South West Regional Building Excellence Awards 2017.
