Rural Regeneration
Keinton Mandeville, SomersetRural Regeneration looks at opportunities to support the revitalisation of rural regions. The aim is to make a significant and sustainable impact on rural communities. O2i Design undertook this work on a site located in the heart of Somerset.
Blue Lias was extracted from this 9-hectare quarry. O2i Design Ltd was commissioned to undertake a rural regeneration study on the site. There were still areas of good rock, not yet quarried, but the majority lies beneath the location of a Roman Villa, which could not be disturbed. O2i Design Consultants and Planning Consultants were appointed to establish the best possible use for the site. This study looked at the option of developing the site into a mixed-use site with commercial, private and social housing, incorporating a village green, recreational facilities, allotments and woodland area.
The key objectives were to ensure that all developments improved the character and quality of the area; respected and were sympathetic to the existing local character while protecting the natural environment. The regeneration proposal creates an attractive, harmonious space suitable for the community.
The proposal looked at the inclusion of sustainable materials and the integration of low-energy systems. The study resulted in the successful sale of the site.
