Rural RegenerationKeinton Mandeville, Somerset
Rural Regeneration looks at opportunities to support the revitalisation of rural regions. The aim is to make a significant and sustainable impact on rural communities. O2i Design undertook this piece of work on a site located in the heart of Somerset.
The 9-hectare quarry was used for the extraction of Blue Lias stone. O2i Design Ltd was commissioned to undertake a rural regeneration study on the site. There were still areas of good stone, not yet quarried, but the majority lay beneath the site of a Roman Villa which could not be disturbed. O2i Design consultants were appointed to work alongside planning consultants to assess the best possible use for the site (without impacting the historical Roman site). This study looked at the option of developing the site into a mixed-use site with commercial, private and social housing, incorporating a village green, recreational facilities, allotments and woodland area.
The key objectives were to ensure all developments improved the character and quality of the area; respected and were sympathetic to the existing local character, whilst protecting the natural environment. The potential development aims to create attractive, harmonious and well-used places that are suitable for all the community.
The proposal looked at the inclusion of sustainable materials and the integration of low energy systems. The study resulted in the successful sale of the site.
