Building Four Sustainable Self Build Homes Near Langport

Creating a self build home is a big step. Most people want a house that is simple to build, comfortable to live in and affordable to run. That was the starting point for this project near Langport.
The brief was clear. Design four homes that self-builders could build with confidence. Keep the design simple. Keep the running costs low. Create homes that would stand the test of time. Today, the development is completed. It shows how thoughtful design can make self-build easier without compromising on quality.
Keeping the Design Simple
Keeping the design simple took careful planning.
Every part of these homes has a purpose. Clean lines, simple shapes and practical layouts make the houses easier to build and easier to live in.
A straightforward design also made construction more efficient. It reduced unnecessary complexity, improved quality and helped keep the project on track.
Building Smarter
The project uses a timber frame system that was manufactured off site before being assembled on site. Factory production improved accuracy, reduced waste and helped speed up construction. Inside, exposed glulam timber beams remain visible. They support the structure while adding warmth and character to the living spaces.
Designed to Use Less Energy
Reducing energy use was an important part of the design. Each home includes high levels of insulation, high performance double glazing and an air source heat pump. Underfloor heating provides even warmth throughout the house. Solar panels generate electricity and help reduce future energy bills. Together, these features create homes that stay comfortable throughout the year while costing less to run.
Designed Around Everyday Living
A home should work for the people who live there. These houses provide generous open plan living spaces, flexible rooms and plenty of natural light. Large windows connect the living spaces with the gardens and surrounding countryside. The layouts give families space to live, work and relax, both now and in the future. For the self builders, the result is more than a new house. It is a home designed around the way they want to live.

Location is an important part of every home. These four houses sit in a peaceful setting just outside Langport.
