Contemporary Extension

Taunton, Somerset

The owners of this beautiful Somerset mill commissioned O2i Design Ltd to help them convert some disjointed rooms into a cohesive home and create a contemporary extension. The scheme involved extensive structural work and the remodelling of the internal layout.

The new scheme provided a new and large kitchen/diner at the centre of the home, an artist’s studio, spacious utility room, new cloak/shower room and refurbished bedrooms and ensuite. The client brief was to create a simple, open-plan space that retained the home’s original character and features.

The new structure opens up the ground floor and provides a natural circulation flow through the original house. The large kitchen is now the pivotal heart of the home. With large windows onto three aspects of the garden, this interior is bright and light. The resultant architecture is a modern and uplifting space that complements the original building.

The project was a finalist for a total of 3 awards in the LABC South West Regional Building Excellence Awards 2017. It featured in the Telegraph magazine (issue 17 June 2017) and Homes and Antiques (issue October 2017). Photographs courtesy of © Penny Wincer
