Contemporary Extension

Taunton, Somerset

This project is a contemporary extension of a period property.

Re-modelling a family home is never straightforward and this renovation needed a little extra help. With an emotional bond to the house, additional attention was required when uncovering elements left by previous generations.  Three artistic generations had left their mark on the building and sentimental features were uncovered and retained throughout the course of this project.

The owner commissioned O2i Design Ltd to take disjointed buildings and turn them into a cohesive home. The brief was to create an elegant, open-plan space whilst retaining some of the home’s original features. The new scheme provides an improved flow of circulation through the original house. It creates a large sociable kitchen with comfortable seating areas and a spacious dining room.  The kitchen is now the pivotal heart of the home.  With large windows onto three aspects of the garden, this interior is bright and light.  The resultant architecture is a modern and uplifting space which complements the original building.

The project was a finalist for a total of 3 awards in the LABC South West Regional Building Excellence Awards 2017.  It featured in the Telegraph magazine (issue 17 June 2017) and in Homes and Antiques (issue October 2017). Photographs courtesy of © Penny Wincer
