Contemporary Extension

Taunton, Somerset

The owners of this beautiful Somerset mill commissioned O2i Design Ltd to help them convert some disjointed rooms into a cohesive home and create a contemporary extension. The new scheme provided a unique and large kitchen/diner at the centre of the home, an artist’s studio, a spacious utility room, a new cloak/shower room and refurbished bedrooms and ensuite. The client brief was to create a simple, open-plan space that retained the home’s original character and features.

The new structure opens up the ground floor and provides a natural circulation flow through the original house. The large kitchen is now the pivotal heart of the home. Large windows look onto three aspects of the garden, making this interior bright and light.

The resultant architecture is a modern and uplifting space that complements the original building. The project was a finalist for three awards in the LABC South West Regional Building Excellence Awards 2017. It was featured in the Telegraph magazine (issue 17 June 2017) and Homes and Antiques (issue October 2017). Photographs courtesy of © Penny Wincer
