Historic Mill Refurbishment

Somerset Levels

This historic, listed water mill was in use up to 1935. However, early twentieth-century restoration now requires considered and sensitive updates and renovations. The clients asked O2i Design to oversee the Mill’s restoration without compromising its history. The extensive works included:

  • The conversion of the existing garage into a bedroom with an adjoining ensuite bathroom and utility room. The relocation of bedrooms and bathrooms;
  • Alterations to the ground level entrance and staircase access to the cellar with the relocation of an internal staircase;
  • Extensive thermal insulation within floor construction between the basement and the ground floor;
  • Renovations to the roof include new rooflights and repairs to the tall square tapered brick chimney.

This project was a finalist in the SW Regional LABC Building Excellence Awards 2020 for the design and building of this heritage project.

The builders were Somerton Property Maintenance and Michael  Howley Builder.
