O2i Design Consultants were commissioned to design a contemporary kitchen extension. This bright, modern kitchen diner has been created in a bespoke timber extension. The old roughly built timber-framed lean-to has been replaced with a spacious kitchen extension. New internal openings have improved internal circulation and link the kitchen to the other rooms.
The contemporary design was chosen because the modern extension maintained the integrity and interpretation of the original building. The new external construction was finished in first-grade oak. To maximise light, dark grey aluminium slim window frames were specified. These are set back in the wall so that the emphasis is on the whole opening. The excellent insulating performance contributes to minimising any heat loss and maximising heat from the sun. The new entrances and doorways have improved circulation on the ground floor, whilst the new kitchen extension provides a great new space for cooking and relaxing with easy access to the garden.
This project was the only project nominated and shortlisted by South Somerset District Council in the South West Regional LABC Building Excellence Awards 2013.
