O2i Design Consultants were commissioned to design a contemporary kitchen extension. Our designers drew up the extension plans, prepared the Listed Building Consent and Building Regulations for this beautiful listed house. The rear of the house which consisted of a roughly built timber framed lean-to, has been replaced with a spacious kitchen extension which now flows into their dining and living room. New internal openings have improved internal circulation and link the kitchen to the other rooms.
The contemporary design was taken because a modern extension would maintain the integrity and interpretation of the original building. The final design was chosen for its minimal effect on the fabric of the building whilst reinstating some previous alterations. The new construction was finished externally in first grade oak interlocking panels. To maximise light, (dark grey) aluminium slim window frames were specified. These are set back in the wall so that the emphasis is on the whole opening. The combination of excellent insulating performance and slim frame contributes to minimising the extension’s heat loss and maximising heat from the sun. This project was the only project nominated and shortlisted by South Somerset District Council in the South West Regional LABC Building Excellence Awards 2013.
