Refurbished Workshop

Curry Rivel, Somerset

O2i Design’s team created a yoga studio and gallery space in this refurbished workshop.  All the statutory approvals were granted (planning permission, change of use, and building control regulations) to create a lovely open space.

The workshop was designed to have a minimal environmental impact.  Using highly insulated glazing (IQ Glass), recycled materials and a reed bed water treatment system this refurbished workshop achieve considerable sustainable credentials. The scheme used local materials such as blue lias stone, hydraulic lime render and mortar, oak, as well as high-tech glazing, blended with modern, innovative, green materials such as high grade, self-finished Oriented Strand Board (OSB) tongue & groove. The internal cladding of OSB boards was chosen specifically because it was FSC certified, manufactured from sustainable fast-growing renewable timbers, energy-efficient and carbon negative. The OSB was treated with water-based transparent flame retardant to retain the feel and colour of the material.  This sustainable project received considerable recognition.  This space was nominated and shortlisted in a number of Awards including:

  • Finalist in the Sustain Awards 2012 (Biodiversity Category)
  • Finalist in South West Built Environment Awards 2012 (Sustainability Category)
  • winner of the Green Apple Awards 2012 (Architectural Heritage Category).

This project was sold and has now become a family home, with O2i Design Ltd helping the new owners to gain a change of use and comply with statutory requirements. You can read more about the newly converted farm building here.
